At times I have stuff on my mind that I want to share. It doesn't always warrant a phone call or text to friends, but often it IS something I need to get off my chest beyond a journal entry. So, here we are. Welcome to my random thoughts. Enjoy!

Writing Right

So I was thinking about the importance of good writing. People tend to downplay it, especially when it comes to text messages and social media. Folks seem to think that the quality of those things don't matter. I beg to differ. Writing is such a HUGE part of our everyday lives. Why not do it well? There is a popular saying that states, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression". Texting, social media, email; these avenues aren't only used for leisure, but many times they may be used as an initial encounter with a job connect, other professional opportunity, or even a potential love interest. In each of these cases, it's important that a good first impression is made. Then, after initial contact is made, it is very likely that frequent written correspondence will continue. I've conducted business in which 95% of it was handled via email, social media, and/or text message. It's also become a common practice for recruiters and HR reps to check an applicant's social media. I'm sure it's usually to check for any questionable content and how a person represents themselves, but I'd imagine that, depending on the job, it would also be important that whatever the person is trying to convey is well written.
I recently had someone text me, questioning the steps they should take to become a better writer and I'll share a few with you here.
  • Read, read, read. Reading assists with expanding vocabulary, comprehension, and being aware of various styles of writing that come in handy in different scenarios.
  • Avoid writing short cuts. WYD, IDK, WYA...there are so many abbreviations and acromyms used in text and social media, it could bleed into your professional life if not careful. There was a rep in my office who accidentally sent an email to the entire office that was meant for her direct supervisor only. I cringed as I read the email, because it was full of misspellings, colloquialisms, incorrect punctuation, and horrible grammar.
  • Read aloud. The correct use or placement of certain words can sometimes be determined by reading what you've written out loud.
Writing well also helps in being understood. It's amazing how a missing comma or an extra word can change the whole meaning and/or clarity of a thought. A quick Google search will easily show us how to spell, give us access to definitions, and grammar/spell-check is automatic on many platforms. Let's do better and take advantage of all the help that's at our fingertips!

You are so right. I guess its so easy to take a short cut or not really pay attention when writing/texting... But we need to do better...

The reading aloud point is truly of note! Sometimes a better flow or even grammar mistakes in writing can be noticed by the ear quicker than the eye. Thanks for the reminder!

I will ignore social media posts that include poor grammar. Also, if someone grown only texts me with acronyms or with things like “str8”...we can’t be friends anymore. I know a principal that can’t text a clear sentence and every time I communicate with him, I become angry with myself for not having higher standards. Lol (I still use that one).

That’s what amazes me most. It seems the worst writers are the very ones who should know better!!
